Most often when families contact our office they feel as though they are in a battle with the school district, regional center , and /or mental health and other service agencies. IEP meetings can become adversarial when parents feel they do not have a voice, are made to feel incompetent, and are unable to help their own child. Typically, these feelings develop when there is a breakdown in communication between the parents and the professional staff. Professional staff often forget how uncomfortable most parents feel in formal meetings with professionals. Parents often feel they are "just parents" compared to the professionals. Families are fearful and come to IEP/IPP meetings feeling they won't get what they want, and they aren't being told everything.
As an advocate our role is not to be seen as adversarial to the IPP/IEP process. Our role is to establish and facilitate collaboration between the family and the school district staff, to assist parents by helping them understand the process and assist families in speaking on behalf of their child.
The real object of Education is to give children resources that will endure as long as life endures; habits that time will ameliorate, not destroy; occupation that will render sickness tolerable, solitude pleasant, age venerable, life more dignified and useful
Advocacy covers a range of activities broad enough to include just about everyone in just about any kind of setting. Advocacy is speaking up, pleading the case of another or championing a cause.
Our office offers a complimentary one-hour consultation in which we will review the current issues with you and offer suggestions for next steps.
We arre also available on an hourly basis to give families advice, to provide consultation as well as attend IEP meetings.
